Nadine McSpadden

Meet Me!

My name is Nadine McSpadden and after 22 years of working in Indigenous education, I have retired.   I am proud to be part of the Secwepémc Nation.  My home community is the Shuswap Band that is located in Invermere, BC.   An important fact about me is that I am a 60’s scoop survivour.   I feel fortunate that I have connected with my birth family and community and I believe I have a unique perspective as I have had to learn to walk in two worlds.

Although I am no longer working for a school district, my plan is to share what my 22 years of teaching has taught me through my work with Len Pierre Consulting.

My LPC work:
I am one of many consultants working  for Len Pierre Consulting.  As a consultant, I am able to do  a variety of workshops.   To date, my focus has been sharing some of the teachings related to

  • Anti-Racism and Indigenous Allyship.  This curriculum was developed by LPC.
  • Early learning workshops.  I see this as critical work because early childhood educators may be the first point of contact for our Indigenous families.  My goal is to help ECE’s understand the significance of this role and help them make pedagogical shifts and build their capacity in terms selecting  resources, connecting with Indigenous knowledge keepers and using the  Early Learning Framework to guide their work.

Starting in January of 2024, I hope to expand my work to include:

  • Mathematics for Elementary  Teachers:   embedding  Indigenous content and pedagogy.  Below you will see several titles I wrote for Pearson Education.  Four of the titles relate specifically to Pearson’s Mathology kit.   Workshops I host help teachers not only use the Mathology Little Books with Indigenous content, but they also help classroom teachers see mathematics in Indigenous art, in land-based knowledge and so much more.
  • Cultural Safety in Schools.  How do we support our Indigenous families and our Indigenous staff?  How are we making school a safe place for them to connect with teachers, support staff  and administrators in a way that is culturally safe?    How are we engaging with Indigenous Families?  What kind of events could schools offer specifically meant to welcome Indigenous families?   Twyla Perrin and myself co-hosted 4 sessions related to these topics.  You can find the sessions on LPC’s Youtube channel.
  • If you follow me on Facebook, you will know that I love being out on the land.  You will also know I love taking photos of mushrooms and other interesting things I see when outside.  I have been able to connect this to dyeing with natural materials including mushrooms and dyeing.  Please visit Wildcraft Dyeing’s website for details on Two-Eyed Seeing Workshop connecting ADST, Math and Science to natural dyeing and weaving.

2025 Indigenous Ways of Knowing: Two Eyed Seeing

Also With Zoe McDonell

April 25 - 27, 2025
Participants will be introduced to the notion of Two Eyed Seeing. This is a perspective that takes Indigenous knowledge and merges it with science. This way of viewing the world sees how both perspectives can complement each other and can impact the way in which we forage, connect with land and place and create dyes that are not harmful to the environment.
