2025 Week 4 Adult 19+: For the Sake of the Song
With Ethan Cole
August 11 - 16, 2025
Music is a powerful and unifying form of creative expression that can help to nourish our hearts, minds and bodies. A well-crafted song is perhaps the perfect encapsulation of how music can impact us so deeply (with no disrespect to the symphony). A good song can inspire our spirits and expand our minds.
In this course we will explore songcraft through the various lenses of appreciation, interpretation, and experimentation. No musical experience whatsoever is required and anyone who is interested is most welcome to participate. Musical instruments are welcome but not required. In fact, the only requirements are enthusiasm and curiosity about songs. We will have the chance to hear live music, recorded music, and we will also read and discuss lyrics. We will delve into many different genres and styles of songs. We will even try writing songs ourselves – with no expectations or anticipated outcomes. This course will be thought-provoking, interactive, fun, and inspiring, and I hope you can join us.
‘Think of all the poetry And the pickin’ down the line
I’ll miss the system here The bottom’s low
And the treble’s clear But it don’t pay to think too much
On things you leave behind. I will be gone
But it won’t be long I will be a-bringin’ back the melodies
And rhythm that I find’. Townes Van Zandt, To Live is to Fly
